Court’s opinion on Hungary anti-LGBTI law
Hungary
Today, the Advocate General of the Court of Justice of the EU has just come out with her opinion on Hungary’s 2021 anti-LGBTI law.
Tineke Strik, Greens/EFA MEP and European Parliament Rapporteur for the situation in Hungary, comments:
“The Court’s Advocate General is crystal clear: By disrespecting and marginalising LGBTI persons, Hungary has crossed the red lines of EU values: equality, human dignity and human rights.
“Hungary is no longer acting as a constitutional democracy in line with European values and the EU treaties. The supposed legal basis for the ban on the Budapest Pride is not valid and this celebration must be allowed to proceed without interference from the Hungarian state.
“The Commission must request interim measures to stop the Pride Ban now and ensure that people’s freedoms are protected in Europe.”
