Fighting Workplace Harassment in the European Parliament

The Greens/EFA Group has always been the leading voice in demanding that sexual harassment, inappropriate behaviour and harassment in the workplace is stamped out in politics. We have continually pushed for stronger measures to be put in place in the European Parliament to protect those who come forward.
Workplace harassment is still a big problem: the European Parliament
can do more
Reforming the manner in which the European Parliament's administration handles cases of harassment remains a priority for the Greens/EFA Group. Cases of sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour are still not dealt with adequately at an institutional level. Procedures are too slow and bureaucratic, and the onus is put on those who speak up, rather than those in power. The Green/EFA Group recognises the institutional short-comings and has acted to enhance our own internal procedures to better anticipate possible issues and better protect staff. Everyone has the right to feel safe, respected, and welcomed in the workplace.
How the Greens/EFA are fighting workplace harassment
The Greens/EFA Group has put in place;
  • a policy on Handling Inappropriate Behaviour in the Workplace including Psychological and Sexual Harassment, Violence, and Discrimination,
  • a policy on the Right to Disconnect, and
  • a Code of Conduct for its Members of Parliament.
We have instituted a Harassment Prevention and Response Unit tasked with supporting staff who come forward and raising awareness of harassment. Our staff have access to Confidential Counselors, and we have appointed a Bureau Member in charge of Anti-Harassment.
All policies apply to the Greens/EFA Groups Members of Parliament, Members of Staff, Accredited Parliament Assistants, Local Assistants and Interns. The policies are available to all they apply to on our internal servers

If you have experienced or witnessed inappropriate behaviour in the workplace please reach out to our Harassment Prevention and Response Unit
